Nausea and Vomiting: Cause and Effect
What Causes Nausea
and Vomiting?
Nausea and vomiting can be caused by a lot of things,
including:
- an infection or virus
- eating food that is hard to digest
- anxiety
- motion sickness
- medications
- pregnancy
Nausea and vomiting can also be caused
by cancer itself (especially cancers of the stomach,
liver, and colon), or by your chemotherapy
and/or radiation therapy.
Serious cases of nausea and vomiting can
lead to the following medical problems, each of which
can result in hospitalization:
- dehydration
(loss of body fluids and nutrients)
- loss of sodium and other electrolytes
- reduced ability to think clearly
- weight loss
- scratches or cuts in the throat (esophagus)
- fractures
- slow healing of wounds
