Nausea & Vomiting: Cause and Effect


What Causes Nausea and Vomiting?

Nausea and vomiting can be caused by a lot of things, including:

  • an infection or virus

  • eating food that is hard to digest

  • anxiety

  • motion sickness

  • medications

  • pregnancy


Nausea and vomiting can also be caused by cancer itself (especially cancers of the stomach, liver, and colon), or by radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy.

Serious cases of nausea and vomiting can lead to the following medical problems (each of which can result in hospitalization):

  • dehydration (loss of body fluids and nutrients)

  • loss of sodium and other electrolytes

  • reduced ability to think clearly

  • weight loss

  • scratches or cuts in the throat (esophagus)

  • fractures

  • slow healing of wounds
