Symptom Relief from Alternative
Therapies
Alternative therapies and behavioral methods may help
relieve nausea and vomiting, especially anticipatory
nausea and vomiting, which is a learned response
to cancer treatment. Unlike other forms of nausea
and vomiting, the anticipatory form is not helped
by the medications regularly used to treat CINV or
RINV.
Alternative therapies can relieve nausea and vomiting by:
- encouraging relaxation
- increasing feelings of control
- reducing thoughts of helplessness
Alternative therapies may include:
Self-Hypnosis
is a mental state in which you can create a feeling of total body relaxation.
Progressive
Muscle Relaxation (PMR) teaches you to relax by gradually tensing and relaxing
different muscles.
Guided
Imagery
uses all your senses hearing, sight, taste,
smell, and touch to "mentally
relocate" you to a relaxing environment of your choice.
Acupuncture
or Acupressure
are ancient Chinese practices that use thin needles
(acupuncture) or finger pressure (acupressure)
to treat illness by promoting or redirecting energy
flow to relieve nausea and vomiting.
Cognitive
Distraction
such as music, video games, and other distractions
may focus your attention away from nausea and vomiting.
